Dear United Freethinkers,Jean Meslier, the 17th century French atheist priest, was the godfather of all atheists, and the first person to construct a coherent atheist system of thought in his magnificent work Mon Testment. I have today posted my introduction to the first modern synthesis of Meslier's thought, by the distinguished and brilliant French philosopher Michel Onfray -- as well as a link to Onfray's essay in English on Meslier -- at http://direland.typepad.com/direland/2006/03/michel_onfray_o.html
Meslier was very popular among American freethinkers in the 19th century, when his work went through several editions, but is completely forgotten here today. Michel Onfray's essay restores Meslier to his proper place in the pantheon of freethinkers and atheists. I hope you will help publicize it.
